Its 2990mAh battery capacity is deceiving: the phone can hold a charge for the entire day despite its relatively small size. The screen is surprisingly high-quality — the 5.2-inch 18:9 display has 1440×720 resolution — and it runs Android 1 software free from any bloatware that would slow it down, so it should receive updates quickly. Headphone users will be happy that the phone includes a headphone jack. Keep in mind that the octa-core Mediatek MT 6750 processor does not offer the best performance, and while a strong choice at its price point, the phone does suffer from sluggishness and only has 2GB of RAM, which can make multitasking difficult. However, MicroSD support for up to 128GB cards is available.

8. Samsung Galaxy J2 Core: Best Budget Samsung Phone

Snappy and stylish, the Samsung Galaxy J2 Core is a reminder that you can, in fact, get a perfectly usable smartphone for an ultra-budget price. Samsung’s first foray into Android Go smartphones, the J2 Core has the brand’s Exynos 7570 chipset and a quad-core Cortex-A53 CPU, and the 8GB of storage can be upgraded to 256GB using a microSD card. While the phone, which runs on Android 8.1 Oreo, can’t handle intensive gaming session, it’s fine for less-demanding games and apps. And the 2,600mAh battery can last the entire day with lighter use. The five-inch LCD panel offers quad-HD (960 x 540 pixels) resolution and 220ppi for decent visuals. The 8MP back camera and 5MP selfie camera certainly aren’t the best on the market, but they perform well in bright light and offer features like Beauty Mode and LED flash. Overall, it has a full smartphone design for a tiny fraction of the average smartphone price.

9. Moto G6: Cheap & Best

The Moto G6 strikes that elusive balance between affordability, design, and function. It is one of the best smartphones under 300 2018. The curved, 3D glass back makes it comfortable to hold, and the thin bezels mean the 5.7” full HD display offers edge-to-edge visuals. The phone prioritizes speed with a 1.8 GHz octa-core processor and features an Android 8.0 Oreo operating system. Let your creativity loose with the dual-sensor setup of a 12MP and 5MP cameras, or switch to portrait mode, where you can focus on a foreground subject and apply three different editing effects to the photo, including a blurred background or a “color pop.”

The Moto G6 is Amazon Alexa capable of two hands-free options, whether you need to ask a question, use an app, or manage your other smart home devices. One of its only drawbacks is the life of its 3000 mAh battery, which falls short of its predecessors.

10. Alcatel 1X Evolve: Most Underrated

The Alcatel 1X Evolve holds slightly lower specs compared to other devices, but this model’s shortcomings are overruled by its extremely affordable price and best budget smartphone camera 2018. The 1X Evolve contains a 1.1GHz quad-core processor, 2GB RAM, and 16GB internal memory, which is a respectable amount of hardware for such a small device. Additionally, the phone features an 8MP rear camera and a 5MP front-snapper equipped with a built-in flash.

Evolve leaves something to be desired. The display is only 5.34 inches long, but the Alcatel 1X Evolve takes full advantage of its available surface area, with super slim borders and an 18:9 aspect ratio. Unfortunately, the screen does not have HD resolution, but that’s an expected compromise at this price point.

We’ve outlined the key takeaways here so that you, too, know what to look for when shopping.

Honor 7X (Best Valued) is a great value overall, you get 16 MP + 2 MP dual-lens rear camera has plenty of advanced features, along with a hefty battery and a solid processor, making the Honor 7X a great phone for its price. On the other end of the spectrum, one tester wasn’t happy about numerous extra apps clogging up the storage space and also experienced relatively low or inconsistent LTE download speeds, though he said it wasn’t enough to affect the phone calls or basic web browsing.

Moto G7 (Overall Best)  is sleek, modern, and durable. Other highlights like a relatively powerful camera with a slew of advanced features and that it includes Android One OS support. Although it earns high marks on productivity, the  Moto G7 isn’t built for advanced 3D gaming, and neither the screen size nor the battery is terribly impressive given the competition in its price range. Overall, though, according to me it strikes a good balance between power, performance, and price.
